Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865 at Ford's Theater. Of the many personal effects found in the fallen President's pockets, one of the more curious items was an 1864 $5 Confederate note. No one is sure why Lincoln had the Confederate note although some have speculated that he may of received it as a momento during his April 4, 1865 visit to Richmond following the evacuation of the city by Confederate forces. Below is an original 1864 Confederate States of America $5 note of the same exact type that was found in Lincoln's pockets. The actual note taken from his person is located at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.
