XXXXXXXX

Originally Tennessee voted 4 to 1 against secession, but after the firing on of Fort Sumter, the citizens of Tennesse voted 108,511 to 47,238 to secede on June 24, 1861 from the Union. The State relied primarily on notes issued by various local banks of which many were redeemable in Confederate currency. Federal "Greenbacks" were also used in portions of the State, depending on whose control it was under at the time.
